Born on Japan's main island, Michika grew up in the city of Mie and began playing the piano at the age of three. Within the next three years, she was composing and performing her own music. After studying classical composition at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, Michika studied with renowned Japanese pianist Colgen Suzuki and began working professionally at various jazz clubs in and around Tokyo.
In 2000, she moved to the United States and studied with Ron Carter and Geri Allen at City College of New York, while also taking private lessons under the tutelage of Steve Kuhn. She earned her Master’s Degree at CCNY in 2003.
Since then, Michika has performed at many of Manhattan's most prestigious jazz clubs, including Lenox Lounge, Beekman Tower Hotel, The Garage, Cleopatra's Needle, Antique Garage, Arturo's, and Jazz at Kitano. She has also led a trio at New York's jazz mecca, The Blue Note, in 2004, 2005, 2010, 2013, and 2017.
Michika recorded her first album, Infinite Thoughts,
in 2004, joined by David Finck (bass) and Billy Drummond (drums), and produced by Steve Kuhn. In 2016,
she released her second album, Quality Time, with Summit Records (USA), featuring Aidan O'Donnell (bass) and Billy Drummond (drums), also produced by Kuhn. The album reached #33 on the JazzWeek chart and remained in the top 50 for several weeks.
In 2018, she released her third album, Piano Images,
a solo piano recording with Summit Records, once again produced by Kuhn. The album includes a four-hand performance of Kuhn's representative song, Oceans in the Sky.
Her latest album, Eternity and a Day (Summit Records, 2025), features Steve Whipple on bass and Adam Nussbaum on drums, and is produced entirely by Fukumori herself. The album received international acclaim, with reviewers praising her artistry, technical mastery, and the trio’s exceptional chemistry. Following its release, Michika completed a highly successful 17-city Japan tour in August–September 2025, with most performances nearly sold out.
Today, Michika balances her work in the U.S. with annual tours in Japan, where she performs solo piano and has led trios and quartets for the past twenty years.
In addition to her career as a performer and recording artist, she is also an active composer, accompanist, and educator, currently based in New York. She has also contributed to music education through publications such as Learn to Play the Piano with a CD (Natsume Publishing Planning, 1998) and Standard Songs for Elementary School Instrumental Ensembles (ATN, 2005), among others.

三重県伊賀市出身。
愛知県立芸術大学音楽学部作曲科を卒業後、
鈴木コルゲン宏昌氏にジャズピアノを師事する。
8年間日本で活動した後、2000年に渡米。
ニューヨーク市立大学大学院音楽学部ジャズ科に2000年９月に入学し、Ron Carter, Geri Allenに学ぶ。ジャズピアノ界の巨匠Steve Kuhnには2001年から師事。
卒業後、NYでの演奏活動を本格的に開始。
2004、2005、2010、2013年に自己のトリオでBlue Note New York に出演。
2004年にはSteve Kuhnをプロデューサーに迎え、
David Fink (b), Billy Drummond (ds)と共演したファースト
リーダーアルバム " Infinite Thoughts " をリリース。2016年6月にアメリカの老舗ジャズレーベルSUMMIT RECORDSから、同じくSteve Kuhn監修のセカンドアルバム ” QUALITY TIME "
( Aidan O'Donnell (b), Billy Drummond (d)) を
全世界で発売。
発売記念コンサートをNYの誇れるJazz Clubで
あるJazz at Kitano (2016年11月) とBlue Note (2017年1月) で行い、成功を収める。
またこのアルバムは、全米JazzラジオチャートのJazzWeekに数週間ランクインし、33位にチャートインを果たす。
2018年6月には3枚目のアルバムで初のソロピアノアルバム”Piano Images”をSUMMIT RECORDS
から発売。前２作同様に師であるSteve Kuhnの
プロデュースで、今回は彼の代表作品の一つで
ある”Oceans In the sky” に4手で福森と演奏して
おり、Kuhnが評価している8曲の彼女のオリジナル曲と共にこのアルバムの聴き所である。
尚、このアルバムに収録されている福森の
オリジナル曲 "Into The New World"は、Kuhnの
アルバム"To And From The Heart"（Steve Swallow (b), Joey Baron(d) / Sunnyside 2018) に収録されている。
そして,2025年6月6日には、待望の第4作となるピアノトリオ・アルバム《Eternity and a Day》をリリース。

オリジナル曲を中心とした、自身の芸術的成熟と進化を刻んだ作品となっている。このアルバムは、国際的に高く評価され、CD HotListやThe Jazz Time (USA), The Jazz Journal (UK)
国内ではジャズ批評などのレビューではその芸術性、技術力、トリオの卓越したアンサンブルが称賛されている。2025年8〜9月に17都市を巡る日本ツアーを行い、多くの会場が満席の成功を納めた。
ヴォーカリストの伴奏者としても定評があり、2002年より10年以上にわたりCarol Fredette (vo)のワークショップ伴奏を務めたほか、多くのシンガーのサポートも行っている。
2025年には、福岡在住シンガー西村香織のデビューアルバム*My Journey*を、共同プロデュースし、音楽監督、アレンジ、ピアニストを務めた。その繊細な伴奏とアレンジには定評がある。
また、日本ツアーは2004年以降、年に一度のペースで開催され、各地で好評を博し、20年以上にわたり継続している。
ニューヨークでは、これまで Cleopatra's Needle、Garage、Lenox Lounge、Antique Garage、Arturo's、Zinc Bar、Jazz at Kitano、Blue Note New Yorkなど、数々の名門ジャズクラブでのトリオおよびソロ演奏を重ね、確かな実力と繊細な音楽性により高い評価を得ている。
近年は音楽教育にも力を注ぎ、多くの子どもたちをニューヨークの名門音楽校などへ進学させるなど、着実に実績を重ねている。
